Last week I bid $21 on a late model (probably post-war) F-S sheath in dirty, ratty condition. I figured I go as high as $45-60. I didn't get a second bid in before it had passed $100! To make a long story short, it sold for around $240. Holy cow. Previously I had marked several non-FS sheaths for possible purchase. In the end I bought the one in this photo for $40. It is well made and a perfect fit. I hear you. It is not a traditional F-S sheath. You might notice the knife is not a traditional F-S. Was the price too high for the sheath I didn't win? I guess it all depends on your perspective. I certainly felt it was an unreasonable price to pay.

If you have been following my website or blog you know my primary goal is to help educate new collectors and share images and material with the public. My books are another means of disseminating information. I mentioned that $60 might seem like a lot of money for a paper bound book but it could potentially save you a lot of money if it prevented you from buying a fake knife or pay way more than it is worth. I know I have bought a couple of those bad choices and wondered "what was I thinking." Last week I bid $21 on a late model (probably post-war) F-S sheath in dirty, ratty condition. I certainly felt it was an unreasonable price to pay. Keep in mind that often a sheath was lost or ruined during its life and had to be replaced. If you are not selling or representing it as being "original" to the knife there is no issue. A sheath is just a means of carrying a knife or storing it. If it is a First Pattern, an OSS Stiletto or something exotic like a V-42 that's different. If it is a garden variety F-S don't go crazy trying to find a perfect match. In my books, I make note of when I know, or suspect, that a sheath is not original to a particular knife. If you are a dealer/seller you ought to do the same thing.
